Defence Minister Explains Why Troops Delayed Assault on Bandits Holding Hostages
The Minister of Defence has explained that security forces exercised restraint during a recent anti-banditry operation after armed bandits threatened to kill their captives if troops launched a direct assault.
According to the minister, intelligence gathered during the operation indicated that the criminals had warned they would execute the hostages if security personnel attempted to close in on their hideout. The threat prompted military commanders to adopt a more cautious approach aimed at safeguarding the lives of those held captive.
The minister said the primary objective of the operation was to secure the safe release of the hostages while neutralising the criminal group. He noted that military authorities carefully assessed the risks before deciding on the most appropriate strategy to avoid unnecessary civilian casualties.
He stressed that the Armed Forces remain committed to defeating banditry and other forms of violent crime across the country, adding that operational decisions are guided by intelligence and the need to protect innocent lives.
The Defence Minister reaffirmed that security agencies would continue to intensify operations against bandits and other criminal elements, assuring Nigerians that efforts to restore peace and security remain a top priority.
He also urged citizens to continue supporting security agencies with credible intelligence, noting that public cooperation remains essential in the fight against insecurity.
The military, he added, will sustain coordinated operations across affected regions to dismantle criminal hideouts, rescue victims and bring perpetrators to justice.
