Lagos LCDA Proposes ₦50,000 Fine, Three-Month Jail Term for Residents Without Waste Bins
Residents of the Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in Lagos State may soon face a ₦50,000 fine or up to three months’ imprisonment for failing to provide waste bins in their homes if a proposed environmental sanitation law is approved.
The proposed legislation, titled the Environmental Management and Protection Law, is designed to strengthen waste management, improve public sanitation, and promote environmental sustainability across the council area.
Chairman of the LCDA, Samiat Bada, said the initiative forms part of the council’s broader commitment to creating a cleaner, healthier, and more environmentally responsible community. She noted that proper waste disposal remains a shared responsibility between the government and residents.
Under the proposed law, every household and business premises would be required to maintain approved waste bins and dispose of refuse through licensed waste operators. The council said the measure is intended to curb indiscriminate waste disposal, reduce environmental pollution, and improve public health.
The legislation also outlines penalties for other environmental offences, including illegal dumping of refuse, obstruction of drainage channels, and activities capable of degrading the environment.
According to the council, stricter enforcement of environmental regulations has become necessary to address growing sanitation challenges and ensure compliance with waste management standards.
Officials explained that the proposed law would complement existing environmental policies while encouraging residents to adopt responsible waste disposal practices.
If enacted, the law is expected to enhance environmental cleanliness, reduce health risks associated with poor waste management, and support the Lagos State Government’s drive toward a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
