FG Launches FreeTV Platform with 100 Channels to Transform Digital Broadcasting in Nigeria
The Federal Government has officially launched FreeTV, a nationwide digital television platform designed to provide Nigerians with free access to more than 100 television channels as part of the country’s long-awaited Digital Switch Over (DSO) programme.
The initiative, unveiled through the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NigComSat), is expected to transform television broadcasting by expanding access to quality content, improving picture and sound quality, and enhancing audience measurement for broadcasters and advertisers.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the project as a major milestone in Nigeria’s broadcasting industry, noting that the transition from analogue to digital broadcasting had faced years of delays before reaching its current stage. He said the new platform aligns with ongoing reforms aimed at modernising the nation’s communication and information infrastructure.
According to the NBC, FreeTV will offer viewers a wide range of programming, including news, sports, education, entertainment, movies, children’s content, and cultural programmes in multiple Nigerian languages. The platform is designed to reach millions of households across the country without subscription fees, making television access more affordable and inclusive.
Officials explained that the digital platform operates through a hybrid satellite and internet-based system, enabling nationwide coverage and improved signal reliability. The government also revealed plans to establish regional production centres to encourage local content development and give creators across Nigeria greater opportunities to produce and distribute programmes.
In addition, the project will introduce advanced audience measurement technology, providing broadcasters and advertisers with accurate viewership data to support informed business decisions and improve content delivery.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the launch, describing it as a significant step toward modernising Nigeria’s media landscape, expanding digital inclusion, and creating new opportunities for content creators, broadcasters, and advertisers.
The Federal Government expressed confidence that the FreeTV platform will accelerate Nigeria’s transition to digital broadcasting while delivering greater access to information, education, and entertainment for millions of citizens nationwide.
