Tinubu Approves 1,000 Forest Guards for Katsina to Strengthen Fight Against Insecurity

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards in Katsina State as part of renewed efforts to combat banditry, kidnapping and other security threats affecting communities across the state.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda announced the presidential approval after a strategic stakeholders’ meeting with Islamic clerics and community leaders in Katsina. According to the governor, the newly approved forest guards will be recruited, trained and equipped to support existing security agencies in protecting vulnerable communities, particularly those located in forested and remote areas.
Radda explained that the forest guards will work closely with the military, police, Department of State Services (DSS) and local vigilante groups to strengthen surveillance and deny criminal elements safe havens within forest corridors frequently used by bandits. He described the initiative as a major boost to ongoing efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in the state.
The governor expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for approving the state’s request, noting that the intervention demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing insecurity in frontline states battling armed criminal groups. He added that the recruits would comprise able-bodied young men and women who would be deployed to assist conventional security forces in safeguarding communities.
Beyond security deployments, Radda emphasized the importance of community participation in the fight against insecurity. He observed that criminal networks often rely on local collaborators for intelligence, logistics and the disposal of stolen property, making public cooperation essential for lasting success.
The governor also commended the Federal Government for increasing the deployment of military personnel, police officers and intelligence operatives to Katsina, describing the collaboration between federal and state authorities as encouraging and critical to defeating banditry. He urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing credible information to security agencies.
The approval of the 1,000 forest guards is expected to strengthen community-based security architecture in Katsina and improve surveillance across forest areas that have long served as operational bases for criminal gangs. The initiative aligns with broader national efforts to enhance internal security and protect lives and property across Nigeria.
