COOU Dismisses Four Lecturers Over Alleged Sexual Harassment, Extortion and Professional Misconduct
Authorities of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) have dismissed four lecturers following allegations of sexual harassment, extortion, and other acts of professional misconduct, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to maintaining ethical standards and academic integrity.
The decision was reached after the university concluded disciplinary proceedings into various complaints lodged against the affected academic staff. According to the institution, the sanctions followed recommendations from relevant investigative and disciplinary committees that examined the allegations.
University management stated that the affected lecturers were found culpable of actions that violated the institution’s code of conduct and regulations governing staff behavior. The offenses reportedly ranged from inappropriate relationships with students to financial exploitation and conduct considered detrimental to the image of the university.
The university emphasized that it maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward sexual harassment, extortion, and any form of abuse of office. Management noted that disciplinary measures are necessary to protect students, preserve public confidence, and uphold the values of professionalism within the institution.
Officials also urged students and members of the university community to continue reporting cases of misconduct through established channels, assuring them that all complaints would be thoroughly investigated and handled without fear or favor.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the move, describing it as a strong message against unethical practices in higher institutions and a step toward creating a safer learning environment for students.
The development comes amid growing calls for Nigerian universities to strengthen mechanisms for addressing sexual harassment, extortion, and abuse of authority within the academic system.
University authorities reiterated their commitment to transparency, accountability, and the protection of students’ rights, stressing that no staff member would be shielded from disciplinary action if found guilty of misconduct.
