UNIPORT Withdraws Student Activities Suspension, Reconstitutes SUG Electoral Committee
The management of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has withdrawn its earlier circular suspending student union-related activities and announced the reconstitution of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) Electoral Committee, paving the way for the continuation of the union election process.
The university disclosed that the decision followed a review of the situation surrounding the student union elections and consultations with relevant stakeholders. The withdrawal of the suspension restores approved student activities connected to the SUG electoral process, while the newly constituted Electoral Committee has been mandated to conduct a credible, transparent, and peaceful election in line with the institution’s regulations.
UNIPORT urged all students, aspirants, and stakeholders to remain law-abiding and cooperate with the new Electoral Committee to ensure a successful exercise. The management emphasized that all participants must strictly adhere to the university’s guidelines, warning that any act capable of disrupting peace or undermining the integrity of the election would attract appropriate disciplinary measures.
The institution reaffirmed its commitment to promoting democratic participation, transparency, and peaceful coexistence within the university community. It expressed confidence that the reconstituted committee would deliver a free, fair, and credible Students’ Union Government election that reflects the wishes of the student body.
