Osun Election: Arrest of Accord Lawmaker, Scores of Suspects Deepens Concerns Over Alleged Vote Buying, Voter Inducement

Fresh controversy has erupted in the ongoing Osun State governorship election following the arrest of an Accord Party lawmaker and scores of other persons, a development likely to intensify concerns already surrounding alleged vote buying, voter inducement and attempts to compromise the integrity of the poll.

The Osun State Police Command confirmed the arrest of Abiola Ibrahim Inaolaji, the lawmaker representing Irewole/Isokan State Constituency in the Osun State House of Assembly, following a security operation in Ikire.

Police said the legislator was taken into custody after security operatives discovered a large number of people at a private residence in the early hours of Saturday.

The development comes amid heightened security across Osun as voters decide who will govern the state, with security agencies under pressure to prevent violence, voter intimidation, inducement and other electoral offences.

According to police accounts, Ibrahim was arrested for allegedly harbouring suspected electoral mercenaries. Reports put the number of people arrested alongside him at about 146, although there are conflicting accounts over the precise figure.

The lawmaker, however, denied wrongdoing in footage circulating from the scene, maintaining that those found at the premises were voters who had come to participate in the governorship election.

“They are voters for the election happening today,” Ibrahim told security operatives, insisting that some were indigenes who had returned from outside the area and denying that he hired or promised them anything.

The incident has nevertheless added another dimension to growing concerns over alleged electoral manipulation and voter inducement surrounding the highly competitive Osun governorship election.

Separate reports from the operation alleged that more than 200 Permanent Voter Cards were recovered and that some of those apprehended may have been brought into Osun from neighbouring states. These claims remain allegations subject to police investigation and should not be treated as established guilt until investigators complete their findings.

Of particular concern are reports alleging that some individuals may have been recruited with promises of financial rewards in exchange for their votes. If established by investigators, such conduct would raise serious questions about attempts to undermine the principle that voters must be allowed to make their electoral choices freely and without financial inducement.

The latest arrests therefore reinforce earlier concerns over alleged vote buying in the Osun election and demonstrate why security agencies, election observers and officials must maintain close surveillance around polling units and other strategic locations.

Vote buying has increasingly emerged as one of the major threats to credible elections in Nigeria. The practice potentially turns elections into contests of financial strength rather than genuine expressions of the will of the electorate, particularly when economically vulnerable voters are targeted with cash, food or other incentives.

The Ikire incident also raises questions that investigators will be expected to answer: Who were the people found at the residence? Where were they registered to vote? Why were so many people gathered at a private residence on election day? Were any financial inducements offered? And were the PVCs reportedly recovered connected to any attempt to influence the election?

Those questions are particularly important because mere presence at a residence or travelling into a community does not, on its own, establish an electoral offence. Investigators will therefore need to establish the circumstances surrounding the gathering and determine whether any law was violated.

The police have said investigations are continuing to establish the full circumstances of the incident and identify any other persons who may have been involved.

The operation also sends a strong signal that security agencies are closely monitoring activities capable of undermining the election and that politicians and their supporters, irrespective of party affiliation, could face investigation where credible allegations of electoral offences arise.

For Osun voters, the development underscores the importance of resisting attempts by politicians or their agents to influence electoral choices through money or material benefits. The governorship election should ultimately be determined by lawful ballots freely cast by registered voters.

As voting continues across the state, attention will remain focused on the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies to ensure that allegations of vote buying, voter inducement, intimidation or illegal possession of electoral materials are promptly investigated.

The credibility of the Osun governorship election will ultimately depend not only on the final figures announced at the collation centre but also on whether voters were able to exercise their constitutional rights freely, peacefully and without financial inducement.
