Sues Senate Over Alleged Withholding of N210 Trillion NNPCL Audit Report
Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has filed a lawsuit against the Nigerian Senate over the alleged withholding of an audit report linked to the controversial N210 trillion financial queries involving the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
The legal action comes amid heightened public interest in the ongoing scrutiny of NNPCL’s financial records and audit observations covering several years of operations. The Senate had earlier commenced investigations into the audit findings and invited current and former officials of the national oil company to provide explanations regarding the figures contained in the reports.
Falana is seeking a court order compelling the release of the audit report, arguing that Nigerians have a constitutional right to access information concerning the management of public funds and national assets.
According to the senior lawyer, transparency and accountability remain fundamental principles of democratic governance, and citizens should not be denied access to documents relating to public institutions and the stewardship of national resources.
The controversy surrounding the N210 trillion audit queries has generated widespread debate across the country, with lawmakers demanding detailed explanations on various financial entries, including liabilities, receivables, and other transactions captured in NNPCL’s audited accounts.
The Senate Public Accounts Committee had previously summoned current and former NNPCL executives to appear before it and clarify issues arising from the audit reports. The committee maintained that the figures under review required proper explanation and reconciliation to ensure public confidence in the nation’s financial management systems.
Falana’s court action is expected to intensify discussions on transparency in Nigeria’s petroleum sector and reinforce calls for greater accountability in the management of public resources.
Legal observers believe the outcome of the case could have far-reaching implications for public access to government records, legislative proceedings, and audit reports involving matters of national economic importance.
As the case progresses, stakeholders in the oil and gas industry, civil society organisations, and anti-corruption advocates are expected to closely monitor developments and their impact on governance and transparency in Nigeria.
