Senate Directs Security Agencies to Arrest Bandits Flaunting Cash on TikTok
The Nigerian Senate has directed security agencies to identify, track, and arrest bandits and other criminal elements who openly display large sums of cash and suspected proceeds of crime on social media platforms, particularly TikTok.
The resolution followed concerns raised by lawmakers over the growing trend of suspected bandits and kidnappers using social media to flaunt wealth believed to have been acquired through criminal activities, including ransom payments and other illicit operations.
During plenary, senators condemned the circulation of videos showing suspected criminals displaying bundles of cash, weapons, and luxury items while openly mocking law enforcement agencies and spreading fear among citizens.
Lawmakers described the development as a dangerous glorification of criminality capable of encouraging vulnerable youths to engage in unlawful activities. They stressed that allowing such acts to continue unchecked could undermine ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity across the country.
The Senate subsequently called on the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Armed Forces, and other relevant security agencies to intensify surveillance, intelligence gathering, and enforcement actions against individuals using digital platforms to promote criminal enterprises.
According to the lawmakers, social media should not become a safe haven for criminal groups seeking to publicize illegal activities, intimidate communities, or celebrate proceeds obtained through violence and kidnapping.
The upper legislative chamber also urged stronger collaboration between security agencies and technology companies to facilitate the identification and prosecution of criminal elements operating online.
The directive comes as Nigeria continues to confront security challenges, including banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, and other violent crimes affecting several parts of the country.
Security experts have welcomed the Senate’s intervention, arguing that disrupting the online activities of criminal groups could weaken their influence, reduce recruitment efforts, and help security agencies gather intelligence for effective operations.
The Senate reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening national security and ensuring that individuals involved in criminal activities are brought to justice.
