Nigeria, US Forces Eliminate Top ISIS Commander Al-Minuki in Major Counterterror Operation
Nigerian and United States forces have successfully eliminated notorious ISIS leader Abu-Bilal al-Minuki during a coordinated military operation in the Lake Chad Basin, marking a significant breakthrough in the fight against terrorism in West Africa.
The operation, described as highly strategic and intelligence-driven, targeted the senior Islamic State commander believed to be one of the most influential figures within the terrorist network globally. Reports indicated that Al-Minuki was killed alongside several of his close associates during the joint offensive carried out by Nigerian troops and US military personnel.
According to security sources, the mission combined aerial surveillance, intelligence gathering, and coordinated ground assaults to dismantle the terrorist hideout located in northeastern Nigeria. The strike reportedly occurred in the volatile Lake Chad region, an area long affected by insurgent activities linked to Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
United States President Donald Trump reportedly confirmed the development, describing Al-Minuki as one of the world’s most dangerous terrorists and a key operational figure within ISIS. Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also praised the operation, highlighting the growing military cooperation between Nigeria and the United States in combating terrorism.
Security experts noted that Al-Minuki played critical roles in ISIS operations, including financing, weapons coordination, propaganda activities, and recruitment efforts across Africa and the Sahel region. The United States had earlier designated him a global terrorist over alleged links to several deadly attacks and insurgency operations.
Military analysts believe the successful elimination of the ISIS commander could significantly weaken terrorist networks operating across Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon. However, authorities warned that extremist groups may attempt retaliatory attacks following the high-profile operation.
The Nigerian Defence Headquarters reportedly described the mission as a major victory in ongoing regional counterterrorism efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in the Northeast.
