The General Who Led the Rescue Team: How Major General Nnebeife Coordinated the 54-Day Mission
Major General Chinedu Ralph Nnebeife, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, has been widely credited with coordinating the complex security operation that secured the freedom of 44 teachers and students abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The victims, who were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, were held captive for 54 days in the forest around the Old Oyo National Park before they regained their freedom through a carefully coordinated intelligence-led operation involving multiple security agencies.
Security sources said the operation brought together personnel from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), particularly the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), Defence Headquarters, Special Forces of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), as well as local vigilantes, hunters and Amotekun corps.
Major General Nnebeife reportedly supervised the planning, intelligence coordination and field operations throughout the 54-day mission, ensuring seamless collaboration among the participating agencies.
The successful rescue has attracted praise from Nigerians, who commended the courage, professionalism and resilience of the security personnel involved. Tributes have also been paid to officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, with many describing their sacrifices as invaluable in the nation’s fight against terrorism and kidnapping.
The operation is being regarded as another demonstration of the effectiveness of intelligence-driven security collaboration in tackling complex kidnapping cases and restoring hope to affected families.
