Shettima Commissions Akure’s First Flyover, Aiyedatiwa Names Project After Reuben Fasoranti
Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday commissioned the newly completed Onyearugbulem–Shagari/Irese Road Flyover and Junction Improvement Project in Akure, describing the project as a major infrastructure boost capable of driving industrial and economic growth in Ondo State.
The flyover, located along the busy Ilesha–Akure–Owo Expressway, is the first of its kind in Akure, the Ondo State capital, and is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion, improve road safety, and ease transportation challenges within the metropolis.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Vice President Shettima praised the Ondo State Government for embarking on what he described as a strategic and timely intervention at a critical transportation corridor.
According to him, modern infrastructure remains essential for sustainable development, economic expansion, and regional integration across Nigeria.
Ondo State Governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, who hosted the event alongside Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, described the flyover as a historic achievement for the people of the state.
Governor Aiyedatiwa said the project was designed to permanently tackle years of deadly traffic congestion and recurring accidents at the Irese junction, one of the busiest intersections linking Ondo State to other parts of the South-West region.
He noted that the corridor had for years been associated with severe gridlock, road crashes, and delays that negatively affected economic activities and commuters.
The governor explained that the project was initiated during the administration of the late former governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, and was sustained by his administration to ensure completion and continuity in governance.
In honour of elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, who turned 100 on Monday, Governor Aiyedatiwa announced that the flyover would officially bear his name.
The governor also highlighted several ongoing and completed infrastructure projects across the state, including the dualisation of the Akure–Idanre Road, Akungba–Ikare Road, Okitipupa–Igbokoda Road, and College Road in Igbokoda.
He added that over 100 kilometres of roads across the three senatorial districts have also been rehabilitated through asphalt overlay projects aimed at improving transportation and boosting economic activities.
Governor Aiyedatiwa commended the contractors, engineers, consultants, and indigenous professionals involved in the project, praising their technical expertise and commitment to quality delivery.
He also appreciated residents of Akure for their patience and cooperation throughout the construction period, assuring that the project would serve future generations and further transform the state capital.
