Nigeria’s Judiciary Remains Strong Despite Criticism — Justice Adejumo
The Administrator of the National Judicial Institute (NJI), Justice Babatunde Adejumo, has maintained that Nigeria’s judiciary remains strong, independent, and committed to upholding justice despite growing public criticism and scrutiny.
Justice Adejumo made the remarks during a media briefing ahead of the 2025 All Nigeria Judges’ Conference in Abuja, where he emphasized that confidence in the judiciary remains vital to sustaining democracy and the rule of law in the country.
According to him, a credible judiciary strengthens democratic institutions, protects citizens’ fundamental rights, and guarantees fairness in the administration of justice.
The retired jurist explained that conflicting court judgments and criticisms from the public should not automatically be viewed as proof of failure within the judicial system. He noted that differing legal interpretations are common in judicial systems worldwide and often contribute to the development of the law.
Justice Adejumo also stressed the importance of judicial ethics, transparency, accountability, and independence in maintaining public trust in the courts.
He added that the National Judicial Institute remains committed to continuous training and capacity development for judicial officers to enable them effectively address emerging legal and societal challenges.
The NJI Administrator expressed optimism that the forthcoming conference would provide judges across the country an avenue to exchange ideas and discuss practical solutions aimed at strengthening public confidence in Nigeria’s judiciary.
