The political calculations ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election may have taken another interesting turn following the appointment of Dr Karl Von Batten, a United States lobbyist professionally linked to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, to serve as a commissioner on a White House presidential commission under President Donald Trump.

Von Batten, managing partner of Washington-based lobbying and public affairs firm Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C., has recently emerged as a prominent figure in the growing political and diplomatic battle between the camps of Atiku and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

His appointment by Trump is particularly significant because Atiku reportedly engaged Von Batten-Montague-York earlier in 2026 under a 12-month lobbying agreement valued at $1.2 million.

The agreement, registered under the United States Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), covers strategic advisory services, engagement with American policymakers and institutions, reputation management and efforts to promote Atiku’s policy positions and leadership profile in Washington.

Von Batten-Montague-York announced the appointment, describing it as an honour and recognition of its managing partner’s commitment to public service and leadership.

The development comes at an intriguing period in Nigerian politics, with Washington increasingly becoming another arena in the political confrontation surrounding the 2027 presidential election.

Atiku and the Presidency have recently exchanged words over lobbying activities in the United States, particularly following renewed controversies surrounding historical American records involving President Tinubu.

The Presidency had questioned Atiku’s reported $1.2 million lobbying agreement and accused his political camp of attempting to secure foreign validation as preparations for the 2027 election gather momentum.

Atiku’s camp, however, rejected the criticism, arguing that engaging registered lobbyists in Washington is legitimate and challenging the Federal Government over its own reported lobbying expenditure in the United States.

Von Batten’s latest appointment could therefore intensify political interest in the Washington dimension of the Tinubu-Atiku rivalry.

However, the appointment should not be interpreted as an endorsement of Atiku or his presidential ambition by President Trump or the United States government.

There is currently no evidence establishing that Von Batten secured the White House appointment because of his professional relationship with Atiku. Neither does the development establish any formal political relationship between the Trump administration and Atiku or Nigeria’s opposition.

What the appointment does, however, is place an individual involved in Atiku’s Washington engagement within a presidential commission under the Trump administration — a development certain to attract considerable political attention in Nigeria.

The specific presidential commission to which Von Batten was appointed was not identified in the initial announcement.

As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general election, the development further demonstrates how the political contest is gradually extending beyond rallies, party structures and domestic campaigns into international lobbying, diplomatic engagement and reputation management.

For Atiku, the appointment of a lobbyist connected to his political engagement to a White House commission may strengthen the visibility of his Washington strategy, but the ultimate battle for the Nigerian presidency will still be decided by Nigerian voters.

With Tinubu seeking to consolidate his political base and opposition forces working to build a formidable challenge, the emergence of Washington as another battleground suggests that the road to 2027 could become even more politically intense.
