Adelabu’s Strategy: Key Factors Driving His Push for APC Oyo Governorship Ticke
Former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is intensifying efforts to secure the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship ticket in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 elections, relying on a combination of political experience, federal connections, and renewed grassroots engagement.
Adelabu, a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and past governorship candidate, is leveraging his long-standing ambition and administrative track record to strengthen his position within the APC. His aspiration, which dates back several years, reflects persistence and a sustained interest in leading Oyo State.
A major pillar of his strategy is his experience in public service. During his tenure as Minister of Power, Adelabu emphasized reforms in Nigeria’s electricity sector, including improvements in power generation, transmission, and revenue growth. These achievements are expected to reinforce his image as a capable administrator.
Another key factor is his perceived alignment with the presidency. Political observers believe Adelabu’s relationship with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu could influence internal party dynamics, especially in a system where federal backing often plays a role in determining primary outcomes.
Adelabu is also drawing from lessons learned in previous elections. Having contested before, he is seen as better prepared to navigate the complexities of APC primaries, including coalition-building, delegate outreach, and strategic negotiations within the party structure.
However, the contest for the APC ticket remains highly competitive. Other influential figures within the party continue to maintain strong grassroots networks, making internal party politics a critical factor in determining the eventual candidate.
Adelabu has also rejected suggestions of a consensus candidate, stressing that the party’s flagbearer should emerge through a transparent and democratic process.
Political analysts say his chances will depend on his ability to unite party stakeholders, strengthen grassroots support, and present himself as the most viable candidate capable of winning the general election in Oyo State.
