Empowering Women Is an Investment in Nigeria’s Future — First Lady Says

By Akin Alade
Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has emphasised that empowering women should not be seen as an act of charity but as a strategic investment in the country’s future. She made the statement in a message to mark International Women’s Day 2026, celebrated globally on March 8 each year.
Mrs. Tinubu highlighted this year’s theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,” as a powerful reminder of the need to guarantee equal opportunities for women and girls across all sectors of society. She said that when women are given access to education, healthcare, economic opportunities, leadership roles, justice, and equity, the benefits extend far beyond individuals to families and communities, ultimately strengthening the nation as a whole.
The First Lady praised the resilience, courage, and achievements of women and girls across Nigeria and around the world, urging continued efforts to remove barriers that hinder their progress. She said that women have historically contributed significantly to national development and must be further empowered to shape the country’s future.
In her message, Mrs. Tinubu underscored that advancing women’s rights and participation is essential to building a more inclusive, prosperous, and equitable society. “When women rise, Nigeria rises,” she said, reinforcing the crucial role women play in nation-building and sustainable development.
Her call resonates with broader global efforts to promote gender equality and ensure that women and girls everywhere have the support and opportunities they need to thrive.
