2027: Tinubu Preaches Political Tolerance, Says Rivalry Cannot Destroy Friendship with Kwankwaso
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sent a strong message of political tolerance and mutual respect to former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, declaring that their political differences ahead of the 2027 general elections cannot destroy their longstanding friendship.
Tinubu made the declaration in a congratulatory message celebrating Kwankwaso’s 70th birthday, stressing that political competition should never become a source of personal hostility. The President maintained that differences in political affiliation and ambition should not undermine relationships built over decades of public service.
Reflecting on their political journey, Tinubu recalled that their association began in 1992 when both served in the National Assembly. Their paths crossed again in 1999 when they became governors of Lagos and Kano states, respectively, before participating in political activities that contributed to the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013.
The President acknowledged Kwankwaso’s contributions to Nigeria’s political development, including his service as Kano State Governor, Minister of Defence, senator and presidential candidate. He described the former governor as an influential political figure whose experience and leadership have continued to shape national political discussions.
Against the backdrop of growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, Tinubu emphasised that belonging to different political parties and pursuing competing electoral interests would not diminish his affection for Kwankwaso. His remarks underscore the importance of political maturity, peaceful competition and mutual respect among Nigeria’s political leaders.
- Tinubu concluded by wishing Kwankwaso good health, happiness and continued contributions to national development. The birthday message reinforces the principle that democracy should encourage healthy political competition without destroying personal relationships or the collective responsibility of building a stronger Nigeria.
