2027: Tinubu Faces Fresh Political Challenge as Six Opposition Parties Move Towards Single Presidential Candidate
Nigeria’s political landscape may be heading for a major realignment ahead of the 2027 presidential election as six opposition political parties intensify negotiations to produce a single candidate capable of challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The emerging alliance, facilitated by the G100 opposition coalition, has reportedly recorded significant progress following consultations among party leaders and presidential hopefuls. The development signals a renewed determination by opposition stakeholders to avoid the division of votes that could weaken their chances of defeating the incumbent administration.
Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday during the inauguration of the coalition’s Legal and Media Committees, the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Professor Sadiq Gombe, disclosed that negotiations were advancing towards a common political arrangement. The participating parties include the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
Prominent political figures involved in the consultations include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke and SDP presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo. The coalition expressed optimism that substantial progress could be achieved before the end of 2026, although no consensus presidential candidate has been formally announced.
As part of efforts to strengthen the proposed alliance, the coalition inaugurated two strategic committees to address legal and communication challenges. The Legal Committee will examine constitutional provisions, electoral regulations and relevant judicial decisions, while the Media and Publicity Committee will coordinate political messaging and public engagement. These measures are intended to establish a credible framework capable of sustaining cooperation among the participating political parties.
Beyond the struggle for a common presidential ticket, the coalition has identified economic hardship, insecurity and governance concerns as major issues requiring a united political response. However, the ultimate success of the arrangement will depend on whether leading presidential contenders are prepared to subordinate their individual ambitions to a collective objective. With the 2027 election approaching, the ability of opposition leaders to reach a binding agreement could significantly influence the political contest against President Tinubu.
