Tragic : Two young men drown while swimming in River Ogun

Tragedy struck on Monday evening in Onikoko town via Itori in Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State when two men got drowned while swimming in the Ogun river.

The men, Femi Akinola, 32, of Odo Eran Itire, Lagos State, and Tunde Falade, 35, of Kola Alagbado, Lagos, had alongside five others visited the town to attend the inauguration of a Cherubim and Seraphim Church in the area.

A member of the church, Adebayo Adeosun, who reported the case to the police said the seven young boys had traveled from Lagos to Ogun State to attend the church’s programme before they decided to go to the river to swim.

However, two of them were unlucky as they were swept away by the tide of the water. Their dead bodies were later recovered from the river.

Confirming the incident, police public relations officer in the state, Omolola Odutola said the police did not see signs of violence or foul play on the recovered bodies of the victims, “leading authorities to believe that the tragic incident was a result of the unpredictable tides.

The PPRO added that the bodies of the victims were taken to Ifo General Hospital for autopsies and then deposited at the morgue.

“In the wake of the tragedy, the Commissioner of Police issued a stern warning to the youths, urging them to exercise caution and avoid rivers with unknown depths or tides,” Odutola stated.
