The Federal Government has dismissed recent political maneuvers by opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections, stating that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains undistracted and fully committed to economic reform and national development.
Speaking on Monday, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, reaffirmed the administration’s focus on delivering the Renewed Hope Agenda, while describing opposition efforts to unseat President Tinubu as “distractions engineered by those who prefer stagnation over reform.”
“Amid political discourse and increasing media speculation regarding the 2027 elections, the administration remains steadfast in delivering real economic growth,” Idris said in a statement.

“The emergence of a so-called political coalition is understandable in a democracy, but President Tinubu is delivering bold reforms—from taming inflation to stabilising the naira and improving national security.”
Idris listed the administration’s achievements over the past two years, including a drop in oil theft, tax reforms, CNG conversions, student loans, and the launch of a mechanisation programme aimed at boosting food security.
Coalition Tensions Deepen
The statement follows the announcement of a broad opposition coalition led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Minister Rotimi Amaechi, which has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its 2027 platform.
But cracks are already emerging within the alliance.
Saliu Lukmon, a senior ADC member, said on national television that the party will not cede its structures to any presidential aspirant until internal consolidation is achieved.
“We are not handing our party over to anyone. Aspirants must wait while we build the platform,” Lukmon insisted.
Similarly, George Moghalu, the Labour Party’s Anambra governorship candidate, described talks of LP’s merger with ADC as a falsehood meant to demoralise supporters.
“Peter Obi has not left LP,” Moghalu said in Awka. “He will join us at our rally in Onitsha. The rumours are a distraction.”
Tinubu Enjoys Northern Support — APC
Amid claims that the North may be cooling off on Tinubu’s reelection, APC National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru insisted otherwise.
Speaking during a media parley in Ibadan, Basiru said the North remains firmly behind Tinubu’s 2027 bid.
“Only those who failed to develop the North are peddling anti-Tinubu sentiments,” he said. “Go to Kano, Gombe, Katsina—President Tinubu is widely celebrated.”
Basiru also told opposition leaders to “wait until 2031,” adding, “There’s no vacancy in Aso Rock.”
Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, echoed similar sentiments, accusing the coalition of bitterness due to being out of power.
“They had the opportunity to lead. Let them tell Nigerians how they intend to govern better,” Radda said.
ADC Expands, LP Faces Backlash
In a major political blow to the PDP, former Minister of Police Affairs, Adamu Maina Waziri, and Zainab Boni-Haruna, wife of a former Adamawa State governor, have defected from PDP to ADC in Yobe State.
Waziri called the decision difficult but necessary, while Boni-Haruna said, “I have come to my home to inform them that I am no longer a PDP member.”
Meanwhile, the Labour Party is grappling with internal strife, as Abayomi Arabambi, factional LP spokesperson, said Peter Obi faces expulsion for anti-party activities over his involvement with the ADC.
“You cannot belong to two political parties. NEC will recommend his expulsion,” Arabambi said.
Imo PDP, Ondo ADC Clash over Coalition Claims
The PDP in Imo State, through its chairman Austine Nwachukwu, denied any involvement in coalition talks, calling the reports “malicious and false.”
“These are attempts by failed politicians to destabilise the party,” Nwachukwu said.
Conversely, Ondo ADC chieftain Prof. Bode Ayorinde said the party is witnessing rapid growth, adding that Eyitayo Jegede and Agboola Ajayi are expected to join soon.
Former PDP spokesman Kennedy Peretei, now with ADC, declared:
“Nigerians have found an alternative. ADC is the party to unseat APC in 2027.”
But Ondo APC spokesperson Alex Kalejaye dismissed the coalition as a collection of “attention seekers.”
“They’re jokers with no plan. Their ambition will collapse like a pack of cards,” Kalejaye said.
