One Dead, Two Injured in Fatal Accident on Cele Expressway, Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed a tragic accident on Cele Expressway, inward Oshodi, which resulted in one fatality and left two others injured. The incident occurred on Saturday and involved a fully-laden 40-foot containerised articulated truck, five commercial buses, and two privately-owned vehicles.
Details of the Accident
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, explained that preliminary findings indicated that the heavy-duty truck, carrying two large containers, suffered a catastrophic brake failure while traveling at excessive speed. The loss of control led to the containers being dislodged, which then collapsed onto five commercial buses and two private vehicles (a Camry and a Sienna bus), causing significant damage and casualties.
Unfortunately, the accident claimed the life of a pedestrian, while two others sustained varying degrees of injuries. One of the commercial bus drivers suffered multiple compound fractures to his arm and leg.
Emergency Response
LASTMA officers, along with the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority Response Unit, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and members of the public, responded swiftly to the scene. Their coordinated efforts ensured the timely evacuation of the injured, who were taken to the General Hospital in Isolo for immediate treatment.
Additionally, security personnel from the Ijesha-Tedo Police Division were deployed to maintain order during the emergency response and help restore vehicular flow along the affected stretch of the expressway.
Statement from LASTMA
Bakare-Oki expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He urged motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits and traffic regulations to prevent future accidents and safeguard public safety.
He also reassured the public that a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident is underway to hold the responsible parties accountable and to prevent future occurrences. LASTMA encourages members of the public to report any traffic violations, emergencies, or accidents through their dedicated toll-free hotline: 080000527862.
This tragic incident highlights the importance of road safety and the need for all road users to remain vigilant at all times.
