2027 Elections: INEC Recognises Atiku, 471 ADC Candidates on Nomination Portal
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed the recognition of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and hundreds of candidates submitted by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The electoral body disclosed that it has recognised the Senator David Mark-led leadership of the ADC and granted the faction access to its candidate nomination portal, enabling it to submit candidates for elective positions across the country.
According to INEC, the recognised ADC leadership has successfully submitted 471 candidates, including Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate, while only nominations from the David Mark-led faction will be accepted by the commission.
The commission maintained that the rival faction lacks the legal authority to submit candidates, citing the relevant court decision affirming the leadership recognised by INEC. It reiterated its commitment to complying with judicial pronouncements and the provisions of the Electoral Act in handling party nominations.
The development is considered a significant milestone in the ADC’s preparations for the 2027 elections, as the party intensifies efforts to position itself as a major contender in the presidential and legislative contests.
Political observers believe INEC’s clarification may help reduce uncertainty surrounding the party’s leadership dispute and provide clearer direction for candidates and supporters ahead of the election season.
