Adeleke Aide Alleged Self-Kidnap: Police Probe Tests Osun Govt Transparency.
The Osun State Government is facing a fresh transparency test following allegations that one of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s media aides, Shakirulahi Babatunde, staged his own kidnapping in an alleged attempt to obtain money from government officials.
The development has moved beyond an unusual alleged criminal episode to questions about accountability and how the administration will respond if the allegations are established by police investigators.
Babatunde is alleged to have reported that he had been kidnapped, prompting government officials to alert security agencies. Reports subsequently emerged alleging that the kidnapping was staged and that money was being sought in connection with the supposed abduction.
However, the allegations remain under investigation, and no final police findings establishing criminal responsibility had been publicly released at the time of this report.
Governor Adeleke’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, confirmed that the matter had been referred to the police, stressing that the administration was neither obstructing the investigation nor attempting to shield the governor’s aide.
According to Rasheed, after Babatunde sent a message claiming that he had been kidnapped, an incident report was immediately lodged with the police on the instruction of the governor’s Chief of Staff, Kazeem Akinleye.
The case was subsequently referred to the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the Osun State Police Command for investigation.
The state government has also strongly rejected allegations that senior officials attempted to influence the investigation or induce police officers to suppress the case.
Rasheed maintained that no official of the Adeleke administration had attempted to bribe the police, describing reports suggesting otherwise as unfounded.
The government’s position places attention squarely on the police investigation, which is expected to establish what actually happened, whether the reported kidnapping was deliberately staged and whether other individuals were involved.
The controversy has also assumed a political dimension.
The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has made separate allegations concerning the episode, including claims about the political motive behind the reported kidnapping. The Adeleke administration has rejected allegations of a cover-up and insisted that law enforcement agencies are free to investigate the matter.
With political tension already building in Osun State, the case could become another point of confrontation between the government and opposition unless investigators establish the facts and communicate their findings clearly.
Beyond partisan exchanges, however, the controversy raises a wider question about accountability within government.
If an appointee is eventually found through due process to have exploited his proximity to government for an alleged criminal scheme, the response of the administration would become as significant as the alleged conduct itself.
Conversely, allegations against the aide and other officials should not be presented as established facts until investigators conclude their work and, where applicable, the judicial process determines responsibility.
The Adeleke administration says it is prepared to await the outcome of the investigation before deciding on further action.
Rasheed maintained that the governor and senior government officials were committed to transparency and respect for law enforcement institutions, insisting that no official would prevent the police from carrying out their statutory responsibilities.
The Osun State Police Command had yet to issue a detailed public statement announcing the outcome of its investigation as of the latest reports.
That leaves several critical questions unanswered: What exactly happened during the reported disappearance? Was money demanded and, if so, by whom? Were other people involved? And what evidence have investigators obtained?
Answers to those questions could determine whether the controversy remains an allegation involving an individual aide or develops into a broader accountability issue for the Osun State Government.
For Governor Adeleke’s administration, allowing investigators to establish the facts without political interference—and acting on verified findings—will be central to resolving the controversy.
