Police Intensify Crackdown on Extortion, Rights Violations Nationwide
The Inspector-General of Police has announced a renewed crackdown on officers involved in extortion, abuse of power, and violations of human rights across Nigeria, as part of efforts to restore public confidence in law enforcement.
The directive comes amid growing public concerns over misconduct by security personnel, including allegations of unlawful arrests, intimidation, and illegal financial demands from citizens during routine operations.
According to the police leadership, the new enforcement drive aims to ensure strict accountability within the force and eliminate corrupt practices that have long damaged the image of the institution.
The police authority warned that officers found guilty of extortion or any form of rights abuse will face disciplinary action and possible prosecution, stressing that professionalism and respect for citizens’ rights must be upheld at all levels.
The move is also intended to strengthen trust between the police and the public, especially as complaints of misconduct have continued to rise in various parts of the country.
Security analysts note that repeated cases of extortion and abuse have undermined confidence in law enforcement, calling for sustained reforms and effective oversight mechanisms.
The police leadership reaffirmed its commitment to internal reforms and promised that the ongoing crackdown would be continuous and not a one-off exercise.
