Abia APC Crisis Deepens as Kalu’s 2027 Governorship Endorsement Triggers Rift
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State is witnessing growing internal tension following the endorsement of Benjamin Kalu for the 2027 governorship race.
The endorsement reportedly emerged from a stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia, where party leaders from across the state urged Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, to consider contesting. Supporters described him as a strong contender capable of strengthening the party’s chances in the next election.
While acknowledging the show of support, Kalu expressed appreciation to party stakeholders, noting that he would make his position known at the appropriate time.
However, the move has sparked opposition within the party, particularly from Mascot Uzor Kalu, another governorship aspirant, who rejected the endorsement and cautioned against any attempt to impose a candidate.
He argued that the process did not involve all aspirants and warned that any form of consensus lacking broad participation could create deeper divisions within the party. He further stressed that such a move would not be accepted.
The development highlights emerging cracks within the Abia APC as political alignments intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, with competing interests already shaping the party’s internal dynamics.
