A member of the House of Representatives representing Abeokuta North, Obafemi Owode and Odeda Federal constituency, Rt. Hon Olumide Osoba commiserates with the Ogun State government, cultural communities and people of Egbaland on the demise of a popular Olumo Rock cultural artifacts custodian, Mama Sinatu Sanni, known as ‘Iya Olumo’ who died on 1st of June , 2022 at the age of 137.
In a condolence message issued through his Media Office, the Federal lawmaker said Iya Olumo as fondly called was well versed in the Yoruba pantheon of the gods with which she was actively engaged, He also described her as a significant member of the Yoruba cultural leaders who left a very straight forward relationship of her devotion to the global acceptance of Olumo Rock as a respected tourist site.
While appreciating her efforts towards nurturing younger ones in the traditional way,” he described her death as the end of an era in the cultural world, and a loss to the entire world because she had become a bridge across cultures and continents. Her life, he said, ”was a lesson in being true to oneself and to whatever one is committed to.
” Mama lived in one of the enclaves under the rock for more than 40 years where she helped preserve the history of the Egba people and through her singular effort, Olumo Rock has become world renown and preserved for posterity and she would be greatly missed by all lovers of culture and fun seekers across the globe.
Mama left her mark and legacies indelibly on the cultural map of world, and she will always be remembered for her impressive works, love of Yoruba people, passion for the development of the African cultural heritage, and encouragement of truly global cultural village. Although she is dead, her name and her works will live for as long as culture lasts in the world.” he said.
To further ensure that the famous Olumo Rock is quiet attractive to all particularly tourists world over, Hon. Olumide Osoba facilitated developmental projects such as Market stalls and borehole to the place.
