Udinese and Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has been slapped with a two-month ban by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) after being found guilty of sporting misconduct in connection to a betting-related incident during a Serie A clash against Lazio in the 2023/2024 season.
The 24-year-old Nigerian international was accused of deliberately earning a yellow card in the match, a move believed to have been linked to suspicious betting patterns. Investigators flagged the incident after noticing abnormal wagers placed on Okoye receiving a booking during the game.
Following a comprehensive disciplinary hearing, the FIGC’s National Federal Tribunal confirmed on Tuesday that Okoye had violated sporting conduct rules and would be suspended from all official matches for two months, starting from the opening game of the 2025/2026 season.
A statement from the tribunal read: “The National Federal Tribunal, Disciplinary Section, definitively ruling, imposes on Mr Emil Maduka Okoye the sanction of two (2) months of disqualification in official matches, starting from the beginning of the first official competition of the 2025/2026 sporting season.”
This ruling will see Okoye miss at least six competitive fixtures for Udinese, including their Coppa Italia opener against Carrarese on August 18, and the first five Serie A matches of the new campaign. He is expected to return to action on October 19, when Udinese travel to face newly promoted Cremonese.
The incident has stirred widespread debate across Italy and Nigeria, especially in light of Okoye’s past role as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper. His performances since the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations have come under scrutiny, with critics pointing to inconsistency and a dip in form. This suspension now casts further uncertainty over his future at both club and international level.
Okoye has yet to publicly comment on the ruling, but the case underscores growing concerns over player conduct and the expanding shadow of illegal betting syndicates in professional football.
