OGUN 2027: YAYI’S POLITICAL DREAM UNDER PRESSURE AS BUDGET-PADDING PETITIONS REACH TINUBU

Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola’s bid to become Ogun State governor in 2027 is facing a fresh political storm following allegations of massive budget irregularities and petitions reportedly submitted to anti-corruption agencies.
Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, is the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Ogun State and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations.
The controversy comes days after Adeola met President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Lagos.
While Adeola publicly described the encounter as an opportunity to appreciate the President for supporting major Ogun projects, including the proposed $7 billion Gateway Deep Seaport and Ogun State Blue Marine Special Economic Zone, sources familiar with the political circles surrounding the meeting alleged that the conversation went beyond project development.
THE PETITIONS
At the centre of the controversy are petitions reportedly submitted to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission over alleged irregularities in federal budget projects linked to Adeola.
One September petition reported by the media alleged that projects worth more than ₦1 trillion were inserted into federal budgets between 2023 and 2026, with the petitioners calling for an investigation. Another report put the value of the alleged project insertions at over ₦250 billion and raised questions about contractors and companies allegedly connected to some of the projects.
The allegations remain allegations.
They have not been established as fact by a court, and the reports do not amount to a finding of criminal liability against Adeola.
Indeed, another group has publicly demanded verifiable evidence to substantiate allegations against the Senator, saying it conducted field inspections of projects and interacted with beneficiaries.
TINUBU’S REPORTED ANGER
Against that backdrop, sources alleged that the petitions were brought to President Tinubu’s attention and that the President wanted answers concerning the nature and strength of the allegations.
The sources claimed that documents presented to the President contained allegations involving enormous sums allegedly associated with budget insertions.

According to the same sources, Tinubu subsequently confronted Adeola.
The Senator was reportedly asked to explain some of the allegations.
The sources claimed the explanations did not satisfy the President.
One of the most serious claims allegedly placed before the President was that a significant proportion of projects inserted into budgets were allegedly not executed, despite funds purportedly being released.
There were also allegations that some payments connected to supposedly unexecuted projects were allegedly routed through companies described by petitioners as fronts.
Those claims have not been independently verified by Thecitypulsenews.
THE REPORTED WARNING
Sources claimed that Tinubu was particularly concerned about the potential political consequences of the allegations.
With Adeola already campaigning for the Ogun governorship, the argument within political circles is straightforward: any controversy involving the APC’s candidate could quickly become a weapon for the opposition ahead of 2027.
It was in that atmosphere, sources alleged, that Tinubu reportedly issued the bluntest warning of the meeting:
“You are becoming a dent on my administration.”
Thecitypulsenews could not independently verify that the President made the statement.
Neither the Presidency nor Adeola has publicly confirmed the alleged confrontation.
WHY OGUN 2027 MATTERS
The timing could hardly be more politically sensitive.
Adeola is no longer merely a senator defending his record. He is the APC’s candidate for the Ogun governorship race and has been publicly unveiling his development agenda for the state.
His recently announced programme promises reforms in public finance, infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture and other sectors.
That makes the budget controversy particularly politically significant.
An opposition campaign built around questions of public money, project execution and accountability could put the APC candidate on the defensive if the allegations gain wider traction.
And that is precisely why the latest controversy is attracting attention beyond the Senate.
THE PUBLIC VERSION
Adeola’s public account of the Lagos meeting is markedly different.
In his account, the Senator said he visited Tinubu after the President’s return from vacation and used the opportunity to appreciate him for his support for Ogun State projects.
He specifically mentioned the $7 billion Gateway Deep Seaport and the Ogun State Blue Marine Special Economic Zone, while also saying they discussed national issues and the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
There was no public mention in Adeola’s account of a confrontation over budget padding or anti-corruption petitions.
That contrast between the public account and the allegations circulating behind the scenes is now fuelling speculation within Ogun political circles.
WHAT REMAINS UNANSWERED
For now, several critical questions remain open.
What exactly is contained in the petitions?
Has either the EFCC or ICPC opened a formal investigation?
What evidence supports the allegations?
Did President Tinubu personally confront Adeola over the claims? and perhaps most importantly:
Is the controversy capable of changing the political calculations around the APC’s 2027 governorship campaign in Ogun?
Until the relevant agencies, the Presidency or Adeola himself provide definitive answers, the allegations remain unproven.
But one thing is already clear, the Ogun 2027 race has acquired another potentially explosive issue the politics of budget accountability.
