ICPC Defends El-Rufai’s Detention, Says Due Process Was Followed

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has insisted that the detention of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, was carried out in line with the law, stressing that it obtained valid court orders before taking action.
The commission explained that El-Rufai’s detention is backed by a remand order issued by a magistrate court in Abuja, authorising his custody while investigations into alleged corruption, including money laundering and abuse of office, continue.
According to the agency, it followed all legal procedures, including securing an initial remand order and subsequently obtaining an extension to allow for the continuation of its investigation. A fresh order was later granted to prolong his detention pending the outcome of the inquiry.
The ICPC dismissed allegations of unlawful detention, maintaining that no individual can be held without judicial approval. It also noted that El-Rufai’s legal team has been actively involved in court proceedings, including efforts to challenge the validity of the remand orders.
El-Rufai was taken into custody after responding to an invitation by the commission and is currently being investigated over multiple petitions linked to his time in office as governor of Kaduna State.
However, the detention has continued to generate debate, with his family and legal representatives questioning its legality and calling for his release, particularly in light of concerns over the duration of his custody and the absence of formal charges.
Despite the controversy, the ICPC reaffirmed that its actions remain within the confines of the law and that the investigation will proceed in accordance with judicial directives.
The matter remains under legal scrutiny as the courts consider challenges surrounding the detention, while the commission works towards concluding its investigation and determining the next course of action.
