Hon. (Engr.) Waliu Olayiwola Taiwo: A Lifetime of Service, Sacrifice and Commitment to Ogun West
Hon. (Engr.) Waliu Olayiwola Taiwo stands tall as one of the most respected grassroots politicians, administrators, and community builders in Ogun State whose life has been defined by service, sacrifice, compassion, and unwavering dedication to humanity. Over the years, he has consistently demonstrated that leadership is not about personal gain, but about touching lives, creating opportunities, and leaving lasting legacies that positively impact generations.
Born into the noble and respected Saaka Taiwo Family of Ota and Alagbado, Engr. Waliu Taiwo inherited a strong tradition of leadership, community service, and development. His father, late Pa Abudu Ishola Taiwo, was a successful farmer, trader, and politician, while his mother, late Alhaja Abibat Taiwo, came from a prominent and influential family deeply rooted in Ota. The Taiwo family became widely known for its immense contributions to educational advancement and infrastructural development within Ota and surrounding communities.
From an early age, Waliu Taiwo displayed exceptional brilliance, discipline, and a passion for knowledge. He attended Ansar-Deen Practicing School, Ota, before proceeding to the prestigious Comprehensive High School, Ayetoro, Ogun State. Even as a young student, his deep interest in science and engineering became obvious through his creativity and innovative experiments.
After his successful secondary school education, his intelligence and academic strength earned him the opportunity to teach Mathematics at Iganmode Grammar School, Ota, at a time when science teachers were scarce. Rather than seeing it as a burden, he embraced the responsibility as a service to his people and distinguished himself through excellence and dedication.
His academic journey later took him to Yaba College of Technology where he studied Electrical/Electronics Engineering. During his Industrial Training programme at ITT Training School in Lagos, his exceptional brilliance attracted the admiration of late business mogul and politician Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, popularly known as MKO Abiola. His remarkable performance earned him continuous support and mentorship from the late statesman throughout his Higher National Diploma programme and beyond.
Following graduation, Engr. Waliu Taiwo built an outstanding engineering career, rising rapidly through hard work, competence, and integrity. He trained several Nigerians in telecommunications engineering and later became a respected management figure at Rank Xerox West Africa Limited where he served meritoriously and earned numerous recognitions for excellence.
Despite his successful professional career, his passion for helping people remained stronger than his personal ambitions. Long before politics officially came calling, Engr. Waliu Taiwo had already become a dependable pillar of support for many families through payment of school fees, empowerment of artisans, youth mentorship, and intervention in community disputes.
His humanitarian nature and growing influence naturally attracted political leaders who saw in him a rare combination of intelligence, humility, compassion, and leadership capacity. During the political transition era of former military president Ibrahim Babangida, he joined active politics under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and quickly emerged as a strong grassroots mobiliser.
His election into the Ogun State House of Assembly marked the beginning of a remarkable political journey built on loyalty, performance, and people-oriented leadership. Within the Assembly, he became widely respected for his organisational strength, political coordination, and ability to unite people towards collective progress.
His political relevance grew nationally in 1992 when he was appointed Coordinator for South-West Legislators during the SDP Jos Convention that produced Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola as the party’s presidential candidate. His leadership role during that historic convention further established him as a dependable political strategist and bridge builder.
Following Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, Engr. Waliu Taiwo remained committed to strengthening democratic institutions and grassroots mobilisation. His strategic political engagements and unwavering dedication contributed immensely to the emergence of Gbenga Daniel as Governor of Ogun State in 2003.
As Commissioner for Works under the administration of former Governor Gbenga Daniel, Hon. Waliu Taiwo distinguished himself as one of the most impactful public office holders in Ogun State. Under his watch, numerous roads were constructed across the state through direct labour and OGROMA. Rural electrification projects expanded significantly, transformers were distributed generously to underserved communities, and township streetlights improved security and economic activities in several towns.
One of his most enduring legacies remains the establishment of TRACE, the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, which continues to provide traffic management, road safety, and employment opportunities for youths across the state.
His tenure in government was not merely about projects and infrastructure; it was deeply rooted in human development and compassion. His official residence reportedly became a refuge for ordinary people seeking assistance, advice, or support. His generosity earned him widespread admiration among market women, transport workers, artisans, youths, and traditional leaders who continue to regard him as a man of the people.
Beyond politics and governance, Engr. Waliu Taiwo has remained consistent in empowering young people academically and economically without seeking public praise or recognition. His philanthropic gestures have transformed lives across Ogun State and beyond, making him a symbol of hope to many struggling families.
His decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019 further strengthened the party’s grassroots structure in Ogun West. Since then, he has remained one of the most loyal, dependable, and influential leaders within the party, contributing immensely to its growth, stability, and electoral victories.
Many political stakeholders across Ogun West strongly believe that Hon. Waliu Taiwo deserves greater opportunities to continue serving the people because of his unmatched experience, consistency, loyalty, developmental contributions, and grassroots acceptance. To many supporters, his political journey has been defined not by personal ambition alone, but by a genuine desire to uplift people and advance the progress of Ogun West and Ogun State as a whole.
Widely respected across communities, traditional institutions, political circles, and professional associations, Engr. Waliu Taiwo remains a symbol of visionary leadership, integrity, humility, and selfless service. His life story continues to inspire younger generations who see in him a leader whose contributions to society truly deserve recognition, appreciation, and greater responsibility.
