Lagos Court Sentences Two to Prison for Attacking LASTMA Officials in Violent Mob Incident
A Lagos Mobile Court sitting in Oshodi on Tuesday sentenced two individuals to three months in prison each for their involvement in a violent mob attack on Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officials. The incident, which occurred on Monday near LASTMA’s Central District (Zone 9) office in Victoria Island, saw a coordinated assault by commercial transport operators on enforcement officers.
The altercation began when LASTMA officials stopped a white commercial minibus with registration number SMK 742 YJ for obstructing traffic near McWellen Bridge. The driver of the minibus allegedly called for reinforcements, leading to the arrival of two additional minibuses, including one identified as GGE 995 YF, filled with angry commercial drivers. The drivers then launched a violent attack on the enforcement officers.
The swift intervention of security operatives led to the immediate arrest of two suspects at the scene. The accused were swiftly arraigned before the Mobile Court and received custodial sentences without the option of a fine.
Speaking on the court’s decision, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, praised the verdict, calling it a necessary deterrent to those considering similar actions. He emphasized that LASTMA would not tolerate aggression against its personnel, as it undermines public safety and the rule of law.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining order on Lagos roads, stressing its zero-tolerance policy towards violence against its officials and its continued efforts to ensure traffic safety across the state.
