Awujale Succession: Controversy Trails Kuye’s Eligibility as Stakeholders Demand Strict Adherence to Tradition
The succession process for the revered stool of the Awujale of Ijebuland has become increasingly contentious as questions continue to surround the eligibility of Prince Ademorin Aliu Kuye amid allegations of political interests seeking to influence the emergence of the next monarch.
The controversy centres on claims that efforts are being made to position Prince Kuye as a candidate from the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, the royal lineage reportedly entitled to produce the next Awujale following the transition of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.
Opponents of the move argue that while the Kuye family remains a respected branch of the Gbelegbuwa royal lineage, attempts to classify Prince Kuye as a prince of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House contradict established historical records and long-standing customary traditions governing succession to the throne.
Several traditional stakeholders have insisted that lineage, rather than political influence or public relations campaigns, should remain the determining factor in selecting the next custodian of one of Yorubaland’s most respected traditional institutions.
One stakeholder questioned why Prince Kuye was never formally recognised within the Fusengbuwa structure during the lifetime of the late Awujale if he was indeed a member of that ruling house.
According to the source, traditional titles and recognitions are conferred through established customs and are important indicators of lineage and royal identity.
Critics have also pointed to Prince Kuye’s acceptance of the Otunba Ajana title, which they claim is traditionally associated with the Gbelegbuwa Ruling House. Some traditionalists maintain that holders of such titles have historically been regarded as royal descendants outside the direct line of succession to the Awujale throne.
As the contest intensifies, observers note that the race has increasingly taken on the character of a political campaign, with aspirants and supporters engaging in vigorous media outreach, social media advocacy and public engagements aimed at influencing public perception.
Reports of lobbying and mobilisation efforts have also surfaced, although no official allegations have been substantiated.
Despite the prominence of educational qualifications and professional achievements among several aspirants, many traditional custodians insist that eligibility for the throne must be determined primarily by verifiable ancestry, deep understanding of Ijebu customs, and adherence to established succession principles.
According to them, the overriding consideration remains proven descent from Oba Adejoko Fusengbuwa, whose ruling house is next in line to occupy the throne.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Government has repeatedly denied allegations that it intends to impose any candidate on Ijebuland. Government officials have maintained that the administration’s responsibility is limited to ensuring compliance with existing laws and traditional procedures governing the selection process.
The government has consistently stated that the next Awujale should emerge through the recognised succession mechanism and not through political interference.
With the selection process approaching a crucial stage, stakeholders across Ijebuland continue to call for transparency, documentary verification of lineage and strict adherence to tradition.
For many observers, the unfolding debate represents a critical test of whether established customs will ultimately prevail over political interests in determining who occupies the prestigious Awujale stool.
