Mexico Approves Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s Ambassador After Months of Uncertainty
Former Presidential Aide Overcomes Diplomatic Uncertainty, Set to Represent Nigeria in Four Central American Countries
After months of political speculation, diplomatic uncertainty and public controversy, the Mexican government has formally approved the appointment of former presidential aide and political commentator, Reno Omokri, as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Mexico, bringing an end to a prolonged waiting period that generated considerable attention within Nigeria’s political and diplomatic circles.
The approval, officially known in diplomatic practice as agrément, was communicated on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, through the Mexican Embassy in Abuja. José Manuel Briseño Flores, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Mexico in Nigeria, delivered the formal acceptance to Ambassador Babagana Wakil, Director of Protocol at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The development represents a significant diplomatic breakthrough for Omokri, whose appointment had been surrounded by questions over whether the Mexican authorities would eventually grant the necessary clearance.
Beyond Mexico, the approval also covers Omokri’s concurrent diplomatic accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, effectively positioning him to represent Nigeria across four countries. The expanded responsibility places the former presidential spokesman in a position to strengthen Nigeria’s bilateral relations, promote investment opportunities, encourage commercial partnerships and deepen diplomatic engagement across the region.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu initially nominated Omokri for an ambassadorial appointment on November 29, 2025, alongside other prominent Nigerians, including former Minister of Aviation Femi Fani-Kayode and former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu. Following Senate confirmation in December 2025, the President approved the deployment of ambassadors-designate on March 6, 2026, assigning Omokri to Mexico City. However, the absence of formal acceptance from the host government delayed the completion of his diplomatic posting.
The situation became controversial after reports emerged that a Nigerian diaspora organisation had petitioned Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, urging her administration to reject Omokri’s appointment over his previous political statements and public commentary. The controversy subsequently fuelled speculation that Mexico had rejected the nomination, although no official rejection was announced. Omokri repeatedly dismissed the claims, maintaining that the delay was part of normal diplomatic procedures and not evidence of opposition from the Mexican government.
In June 2026, while appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Omokri attributed the delay partly to Mexico’s commitments surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the country co-hosted with the United States and Canada. He maintained that other Nigerian ambassadors-designate were experiencing similar delays. The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs later confirmed in August that Mexico and Japan were among the countries yet to communicate formal acceptance of outstanding diplomatic appointments, while assuring Nigerians that consultations were continuing.
For Omokri, who previously served as a media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan before emerging as a prominent political commentator and supporter of President Tinubu, the development represents a transition from domestic political advocacy to international diplomatic responsibility. His new assignment will demand diplomatic tact, constructive engagement and a commitment to protecting Nigeria’s strategic interests while building productive relationships with the governments and citizens of his countries of accreditation.
As the controversy surrounding his appointment gives way to formal diplomatic acceptance, attention will now shift towards Omokri’s performance in office and his ability to translate political experience into meaningful diplomatic achievements. Although Mexico has granted the necessary approval, the date of his formal assumption of duties and presentation of credentials has yet to be announced. His eventual tenure will be judged by the quality of diplomatic relations, investment opportunities, trade partnerships and practical benefits secured for Nigeria.
