Makinde 2027 Presidential Bid: Oyo APC Demands Accountability for State Resources

Oyo APC Puts Makinde’s 2027 Presidential Bid Under Spotlight, Demands Accountability for State Resources
The political battle ahead of the 2027 general election has intensified in Oyo State as the All Progressives Congress (APC) placed Governor Seyi Makinde’s presidential ambition under scrutiny, warning that the governor could be called upon to account for any public resources allegedly deployed in pursuit of his national political project.
The latest confrontation shifts attention beyond Makinde’s presidential aspiration to a broader question of accountability and the separation of state resources from partisan political activities.
Oyo APC, through its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, accused the governor of pursuing a presidential project that the opposition party believes has little prospect of succeeding against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.
The party claimed that Makinde’s presidential ambition was being used to generate political attention and warned that any public funds found to have been committed to the project would have to be accounted for.
“Makinde is being monitored as he embarks on a political journey that has failed before its commencement, while he would be made to cough up all the public funds he wasted on it,” Sadare said.
The APC, however, did not provide specific figures, expenditure records or documentary evidence to establish that Oyo State funds had been used to finance Makinde’s presidential activities.
The opposition party also questioned Makinde’s capacity to mount a serious nationwide challenge against Tinubu, arguing that winning Nigeria’s presidency requires a formidable national structure, strategy and political network.
According to the APC, campaign posters and billboards promoting Makinde have appeared in parts of Oyo and Bauchi states as political activities ahead of the 2027 election gather momentum.
Makinde, who is pursuing his presidential ambition on the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), had earlier signalled his readiness to campaign across Nigeria and engage voters directly as he seeks support for his presidential project.
Speaking after his installation as the Aare Asoludero of Ibarapaland by the Eleruwa of Eruwa, Makinde said his campaign would take him across the country as he presents his governance agenda to Nigerians.
His growing national political engagement has consequently opened another battlefront between his camp and the APC in Oyo State.
The APC also cautioned the governor over his comments concerning traditional rulers and religious leaders, insisting that institutions outside partisan politics should be allowed to receive politicians and candidates without intimidation.
With Makinde approaching the end of his second term as governor in May 2027, his presidential ambition is expected to become an increasingly dominant issue in Oyo politics.
Beyond the political exchanges, however, the APC’s allegations could intensify public scrutiny of government spending as the campaign season progresses, particularly over whether official state activities and resources are being kept separate from partisan presidential campaigns.
As the 2027 race gathers momentum, Makinde now faces two political battles: selling his presidential agenda to voters nationwide and defending his administration’s record and use of public resources before the people of Oyo State.
