Gombe 2027: APC Gets Major Boost as Ex-PDP Treasurer Backs Gwamna
The political battle for the 2027 Gombe State governorship election is gathering momentum following the decision of former Peoples Democratic Party National Treasurer, Hon. Ahmed Yayari, to throw his political weight behind Dr Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna.
Yayari’s support could represent more than another political endorsement, as the former PDP heavyweight brings years of political experience, grassroots connections and knowledge of the opposition’s structure into Gwamna’s emerging political coalition.
The development comes after Yayari’s recent departure from the PDP, further highlighting the political realignments taking shape in Gombe ahead of the 2027 general election.
Yayari declared his readiness to work for Gwamna during a meeting with APC stakeholders from Tumfure, Wuro Bobbo, NTA and other communities in Akko Local Government Area.
The stakeholders described the former PDP national officer as an experienced political strategist whose involvement could strengthen the APC as preparations for the governorship contest intensify.
Beyond serving as PDP National Treasurer, Yayari previously played a prominent role as Director-General of the campaign organisation of former Gombe State Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, giving him considerable experience in electioneering and grassroots mobilisation.
He has now pledged to deploy that experience towards Gwamna’s governorship ambition.
“I am ready to work assiduously for the victory of Jamilu Gwamna as the next governor of Gombe State,” Yayari declared.
The endorsement is particularly significant considering the political history surrounding Gwamna and the PDP in Gombe.
Gwamna was once a prominent figure within the PDP before leaving the party in the build-up to the 2019 elections. He subsequently aligned with the APC and played a role in the political coalition that helped the party wrest power from the PDP in Gombe.
As the 2027 succession battle gathers pace, Gwamna is again emerging as one of the prominent political figures to watch within the APC.
The latest realignment could therefore strengthen his grassroots network while potentially weakening opposition forces seeking to challenge the ruling party.
APC stakeholders who visited Yayari said the communities they represented cover 24 polling units, arguing that the mobilisation of their supporters alongside Yayari’s political network could become important as the election approaches.
The unfolding developments also underline the challenge confronting the PDP as prominent figures reconsider their political future ahead of 2027.
For Gwamna, attracting experienced politicians from the opposition could help broaden his political base beyond traditional APC structures and position his campaign as a coalition capable of drawing support across party lines.
However, the ultimate test will be whether endorsements from political heavyweights can translate into grassroots votes when the governorship contest eventually gets underway.
With political consultations, defections and alliances expected to intensify in the months ahead, Gombe 2027 is gradually developing into a battle not only over party structures but also over which aspirant can assemble the broadest political coalition.
Yayari has made his choice clear: he intends to put his experience, network and political influence behind Gwamna.
The question now is how much difference that support will make as the race for Gombe Government House gathers momentum.
