FG Unveils Initiative to Engage 50,000 Diaspora Doctors in Nigeria’s Healthcare Sector
The Federal Government has launched a major initiative aimed at engaging 50,000 Nigerian doctors living abroad to support the country’s healthcare system, as part of efforts to bridge the shortage of medical professionals and improve access to quality healthcare nationwide.
The initiative is designed to leverage the expertise, experience, and global exposure of Nigerian healthcare professionals in the diaspora through knowledge exchange, medical missions, specialist consultations, training programmes, research collaborations, and technology-driven healthcare delivery. The government said the programme forms part of its broader strategy to reverse the impact of brain drain while strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare workforce without necessarily requiring professionals to relocate permanently.
According to officials, the initiative will create structured opportunities for diaspora doctors to contribute to healthcare delivery through virtual consultations, capacity building, mentorship, policy advisory services, and periodic clinical engagements across federal and state health institutions. The programme is also expected to improve specialist care, enhance medical education, and boost innovation within Nigeria’s health sector.
The Federal Government noted that the engagement aligns with ongoing reforms targeted at expanding access to quality healthcare, improving patient outcomes, and building a more resilient health system capable of meeting the needs of Nigeria’s growing population.
Stakeholders in the health sector have described the initiative as a significant step towards harnessing Nigeria’s global medical talent, stressing that stronger collaboration between local institutions and diaspora professionals could accelerate healthcare reforms, improve service delivery, and reduce the country’s dependence on foreign medical expertise.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to creating an enabling environment for healthcare professionals while encouraging Nigerian doctors abroad to actively participate in the initiative to support national development and contribute to the transformation of the country’s healthcare system.
