Peter Obi Condemns Midnight Arrest of Professor Aghaji, Demands Respect for Rule of Law
Former Anambra State Governor and National Democratic Coalition (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the alleged midnight arrest and detention of renowned cardiothoracic surgeon, Professor Martin Aghaji, describing the incident as a disturbing violation of the rule of law and human dignity.
Obi expressed concern over reports that security operatives allegedly stormed the 74-year-old professor’s residence in Enugu around 2:00 a.m., arrested him in the presence of his visiting daughter, and transported him to Lagos, where he was reportedly detained for three days before authorities informed him that his arrest had been a case of mistaken identity.
Reacting to the development, Obi described the operation as deeply troubling, insisting that no Nigerian should be subjected to humiliation or arbitrary arrest without due process. He stressed that Professor Aghaji, an internationally respected medical expert and elder statesman, deserved to be treated with dignity and fairness under the law.
The former presidential candidate argued that security agencies must prioritize professionalism and constitutional procedures in carrying out their duties, warning that such incidents undermine public confidence in state institutions and discourage highly skilled professionals from contributing to national development. He noted that the treatment meted out to respected citizens could worsen the ongoing brain drain affecting Nigeria’s healthcare sector.
Obi also recalled previous incidents involving the alleged harassment of medical professionals, saying repeated cases of abuse by security operatives raise serious concerns about respect for fundamental human rights. He urged law enforcement agencies to uphold justice, civility and accountability while performing their constitutional responsibilities.
Reaffirming his commitment to democratic values, Obi maintained that adherence to the rule of law remains essential for national unity, public trust and sustainable development, concluding with his familiar message that “A New Nigeria is Possible.”
