Untold Story of How 44 Abducted Oyo Pupils and Teachers Were Rescued After 54 Days

Fresh details have emerged on the painstaking security operation that culminated in the rescue of the 44 teachers and students abducted from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State after spending 54 days in captivity.
According to security sources familiar with the operation, the rescue was not the result of negotiations alone but followed weeks of sustained intelligence gathering, surveillance and coordinated tactical operations involving several security agencies.
The operation was reportedly led by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, Major General Chinedu Ralph Nnebeife, with support from the Office of the National Security Adviser through the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), Defence Headquarters, Special Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), local vigilantes, hunters and Amotekun personnel.
A separate commentary by Ibadan-based public affairs commentator Mogaji Wole Arisekola, citing an anonymous source, claimed that intelligence operatives carried out coordinated operations in several northern states as part of efforts to weaken the kidnappers’ network and gather information that contributed to the victims’ rescue. The commentary also made political claims regarding communication between the Federal Government and the Oyo State Government during the operation.
However, these claims have not been independently verified, and neither the Federal Government, Oyo State Government nor the security agencies involved has officially confirmed them.
What remains undisputed is that the sustained multi-agency operation eventually secured the unconditional release of all 44 victims without loss of life among those rescued, bringing relief to their families and ending weeks of anxiety across Oyo State.
The successful operation has renewed calls for continued intelligence sharing, improved inter-agency cooperation and stronger security measures to prevent future attacks on schools and vulnerable communities across Nigeria.
