Court Discharges, Acquits Two Lawyers Over Alleged Theft Charges
A Nigerian court has discharged and acquitted two legal practitioners who were standing trial over allegations of theft, bringing the criminal proceedings against them to an end.
The court ruled that the prosecution failed to establish a credible case linking the defendants to the alleged offence. After reviewing the evidence presented during the trial, the judge held that the prosecution did not prove the essential elements required to sustain the charges.
In delivering the judgment, the court noted that the evidence presented was insufficient to warrant a conviction and consequently discharged and acquitted the two lawyers of all counts.
The defence team welcomed the verdict, describing it as a victory for justice and the rule of law. They maintained throughout the trial that their clients were innocent and argued that the allegations were not supported by credible evidence.
The judgment underscores the legal principle that criminal allegations must be proven beyond reasonable doubt before a conviction can be secured, reaffirming the judiciary’s commitment to fairness and due process.
The acquittal brings to a close the legal battle, clearing the two lawyers of all theft-related allegations brought against them.
