Ali Modu Sheriff Says Peter Obi Cannot Win Northern Votes in 2027 Election
Former Borno State Governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Ali Modu Sheriff, has said former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi is unlikely to secure widespread support from Northern voters in the 2027 presidential election.
Sheriff made the remarks during a television interview while assessing the political landscape ahead of the next general election. He argued that the North would not back Obi’s presidential ambition, claiming political realities in the region had changed since the 2023 election.
The former governor also alleged that Obi’s record as Governor of Anambra State could affect his acceptance among Northern voters. He further claimed that many supporters of former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso would oppose any political alliance involving Obi ahead of the 2027 polls.
Speaking on the broader political contest, Sheriff maintained that Nigeria’s presidency should remain in the South until 2031 in line with the country’s informal power-sharing arrangement. He said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, despite his political experience, should wait until the next power rotation before seeking the presidency again.
Sheriff also defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over criticisms of the country’s security situation, arguing that insecurity predates the current administration. He urged Nigerians to assess the government’s efforts to address the challenge, including ongoing measures to strengthen policing and improve national security.
He expressed confidence that President Tinubu would seek and secure re-election in 2027 but stressed that the APC would continue to campaign vigorously rather than assume victory was guaranteed.
