UBA Appoints Emmanuel Nnorom as Group Chairman to Succeed Tony Elumelu
United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has appointed Emmanuel Nnorom as its new Group Chairman, succeeding Tony Elumelu, who will retire from the bank’s Board on August 21, 2026, after completing the maximum tenure allowed under the Central Bank of Nigeria’s corporate governance regulations.
The appointment was approved by the Board of Directors as part of the bank’s leadership succession plan aimed at ensuring continuity and sustaining UBA’s growth across Africa and other international markets.
Nnorom, who currently serves as a Non-Executive Director of the bank, brings decades of experience in banking, finance, investment management, and corporate governance. His appointment is expected to strengthen UBA’s strategic direction as the financial institution continues to expand its digital banking services, regional operations, and customer-focused innovations.
Elumelu leaves office after 12 years as Group Chairman, during which UBA significantly expanded its footprint across Africa and strengthened its presence in key global financial centres. Under his leadership, the bank recorded consistent growth in assets, profitability, customer base, and digital banking adoption while reinforcing its position as one of Africa’s leading financial institutions.
The Board commended Elumelu for his transformational leadership, strategic vision, and commitment to building a globally competitive African bank. It also expressed confidence that Nnorom’s wealth of experience would provide strong leadership for the bank’s next phase of growth and value creation.
The leadership transition reflects UBA’s commitment to sound corporate governance, seamless succession planning, and long-term sustainability as it continues to pursue innovation and deliver value to shareholders, customers, and stakeholders.
