IAEA Calls for Stronger Nuclear Verification in Iran After Middle East Conflict
The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, has called for a strengthened nuclear verification regime in Iran following the recent conflict in the Middle East, warning that rigorous international oversight is essential to ensure Tehran’s nuclear programme remains exclusively for peaceful purposes.
Grossi stressed that the aftermath of the conflict presents a critical opportunity for the international community to reinforce monitoring mechanisms and rebuild confidence in Iran’s compliance with global nuclear obligations. He noted that an effective verification framework would be vital to preventing the development of nuclear weapons and ensuring transparency in Iran’s nuclear activities.
The IAEA chief explained that inspectors must be granted access to relevant nuclear facilities and materials under agreed procedures once the necessary arrangements are finalised. According to him, the agency is working with Iranian authorities on the modalities for resuming inspections following recent diplomatic engagements.
International concern remains focused on Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium and the need to verify the status of nuclear materials after previous military strikes on key facilities. Western governments and the IAEA have repeatedly urged Tehran to cooperate fully with inspectors and provide information necessary to restore confidence in its nuclear programme.
Although diplomatic efforts between Iran and the United States have created a pathway for renewed dialogue, questions remain over the timing and scope of inspections, with Iranian officials maintaining that access to certain sensitive sites will depend on the outcome of ongoing negotiations and sanctions-related issues.
Grossi reiterated that strong verification remains the cornerstone of global nuclear non-proliferation efforts, emphasizing that transparent inspections are essential for regional stability and international security. He expressed optimism that continued diplomacy would enable the IAEA to resume its monitoring responsibilities and help reduce tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme.
