Shettima Orders Immediate Flood Preparedness as Heavy Rains Intensify Across Nigeria
Vice President Kashim Shettima has directed all relevant federal agencies to immediately strengthen flood preparedness and emergency response measures as the rainy season intensifies across Nigeria.
The directive comes amid growing concerns over forecasts of heavy rainfall and possible flooding in several parts of the country, with the Federal Government emphasizing the need for proactive action to protect lives, property, and critical infrastructure.
Speaking during a high-level meeting on disaster preparedness, Shettima stressed that prevention and early intervention remain the most effective strategies for reducing the devastating impact of floods. He urged ministries, departments, agencies, and state governments to work together in implementing coordinated emergency response plans.
The Vice President also called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), and other relevant institutions to intensify public awareness campaigns, improve early warning systems, and ensure vulnerable communities receive timely information.
Shettima noted that disaster management should not be reactive but proactive, emphasizing the importance of continuous monitoring of flood-prone areas, clearing drainage channels, pre-positioning relief materials, and activating emergency response teams ahead of severe weather conditions.
He further appealed to state governments and local authorities to complement federal efforts by enforcing environmental sanitation laws, preventing illegal construction on waterways, and educating residents on flood prevention measures.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding citizens through improved disaster management policies, better inter-agency collaboration, and rapid humanitarian response whenever emergencies occur.
As the peak of the rainy season approaches, Nigerians living in flood-prone communities have been advised to heed official weather forecasts, comply with evacuation directives where necessary, and avoid activities that may expose them to flood-related risks.
