PDP Crisis Deepens as Wike, Turaki Factions Unveil Separate Candidates for 2027 Elections
Fresh cracks have emerged within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as rival factions aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki, separately unveiled candidates for the 2027 general elections, further intensifying the party’s prolonged leadership crisis.
The parallel exercises, held in Abuja, saw both camps issue certificates of return and nomination documents to their respective candidates, each insisting it represents the legitimate leadership of the opposition party ahead of the 2027 polls.
The Wike-backed faction maintained that only candidates produced through processes recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would be valid. Leaders of the camp urged party members to remain committed to strengthening the party by delivering credible candidates capable of winning elective positions across the country.
Meanwhile, the Turaki-led faction announced that it had successfully completed its candidate selection process nationwide. According to the group, it produced candidates for all elective positions, including governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly seats after conducting what it described as comprehensive screening exercises. The faction also reaffirmed its position on its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
The development underscores the deepening divisions within the PDP as both factions continue to lay claim to the party’s leadership and electoral structures. The dispute is expected to generate further legal and political battles as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
Political observers believe the continued leadership tussle could weaken the PDP’s chances unless the competing camps resolve their differences before the electoral process enters a decisive phase.
