Kanu’s Lawyers Raise Concerns Over Trial Procedure, Seek More Time for Defence
The legal team representing Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has expressed concerns over the pace and structure of proceedings in his ongoing terrorism trial, arguing that the defence may not be given sufficient time to adequately present its case.
Speaking after the latest court session, Kanu’s lead counsel raised questions about aspects of the trial procedure and the timeline set aside for the defence, stressing that every accused person is entitled to a fair hearing under the law.
According to the defence team, the prosecution has been allowed considerable time to present witnesses and evidence, and the same level of opportunity should be extended to the defence to ensure justice is served. The lawyers argued that the principle of fairness requires equal treatment of both parties in a criminal trial, especially in a matter of significant public interest.
The legal representatives maintained that they remain committed to conducting the defence professionally and within the framework of the law, but emphasized that adequate time is necessary to properly examine evidence, prepare witnesses, and respond to the allegations brought against their client.
Kanu’s lawyers further noted that the outcome of the case could have far-reaching implications for the Nigerian justice system and public confidence in judicial processes. They urged the court to ensure that all proceedings comply with constitutional provisions guaranteeing fair hearing and due process.
The IPOB leader is facing charges bordering on terrorism-related offences brought against him by the Federal Government. The case has continued to attract national and international attention, with supporters and observers closely monitoring developments in court.
Legal analysts say the debate over trial timelines highlights broader concerns about balancing judicial efficiency with the constitutional rights of defendants. They argue that while courts are expected to avoid unnecessary delays, the pursuit of justice must not come at the expense of due process.
As the trial progresses, attention will remain focused on how the court addresses the concerns raised by the defence and whether additional time will be granted for Kanu’s legal team to fully present its case.
The proceedings are expected to continue at the next adjourned date, with both the prosecution and defence preparing for the next phase of the high-profile trial.
