Presidency Dismisses Viral Claims on Nigeria’s Name Change, Sharia Law Abolition
The Presidency has dismissed widespread reports claiming that the Federal Government plans to change Nigeria’s name or abolish the Sharia legal system, describing the circulating information as false, misleading, and capable of creating unnecessary tension across the country.
In an official reaction, the Presidency clarified that no proposal or policy exists within the administration regarding any change to the country’s name or the removal of Sharia law from Nigeria’s constitutional framework.
Government officials urged Nigerians to disregard the viral reports, stressing that the claims were fabricated and designed to misinform the public and stir political or religious controversy.
The Presidency further emphasized that Nigeria remains a democratic nation governed by the Constitution, which already recognizes the country’s legal and cultural diversity, including the operation of Sharia courts in states where they are constitutionally permitted.
Officials warned against the spread of fake news and unverified information capable of threatening national unity, religious harmony, and public peace.
The clarification followed growing reactions on social media after reports circulated alleging that the Federal Government was considering sweeping constitutional and national identity changes.
According to the Presidency, the administration remains focused on addressing key national priorities such as economic recovery, security, infrastructure development, education, and job creation rather than engaging in divisive debates fueled by misinformation.
Political observers noted that false reports surrounding religion and constitutional matters often trigger heated public reactions in Nigeria, making prompt official clarification necessary to prevent confusion and tension.
The Presidency therefore appealed to citizens, media organizations, and social media users to verify sensitive information from credible official sources before sharing or reacting to such claims.
