APC Primaries Shock as Farouk Lawan Loses Return Ticket in Kano Reps Contest
Former House of Representatives member, Farouk Lawan, has failed in his bid to secure the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for a return to the House of Representatives ahead of the 2027 general elections, in one of the biggest upsets recorded during the party’s primaries in Kano State.
Farouk Lawan reportedly lost the APC primary election for the Bagwai/Shanono Federal Constituency to Yusuf Badau after what party officials described as a keenly contested exercise.
The outcome has generated reactions within political circles in Kano, especially considering Lawan’s long-standing influence in the National Assembly and his previous role as one of the notable lawmakers from the state. Political observers described the result as a significant shift in the internal political dynamics of the APC ahead of the 2027 elections.
The APC primaries across several states have been marked by tension, disagreements over consensus arrangements, and complaints from aspirants regarding alleged irregularities and lack of transparency in parts of the process.
While Farouk Lawan lost his return bid, several other APC lawmakers secured tickets during the primaries. Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Hon. Abba Bichi, emerged unopposed as the APC candidate for Bichi Federal Constituency, while former Appropriation Committee Chairman, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin, also clinched the party’s ticket for Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency.
Other victorious candidates announced during the primaries include Barrister Shehu Muhammad for Fagge Federal Constituency, Abdullahi Muazu Baban Ganduje for Kabo/Gwarzo Federal Constituency, Idris Dankawu for Kumbotso, and Rabiu Ibn Yusuf for Takai/Sumaila Federal Constituency.
The APC spokesperson in Kano State, Auwalu Soja, confirmed that several candidates emerged either through consensus arrangements or direct affirmation by delegates during the exercise.
The development comes amid growing internal pressure within the APC nationwide as party members continue to express concerns over consensus arrangements, delayed screening results, and alleged manipulation of primary processes in some states.
Political analysts believe the outcome of the primaries may reshape political alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially in states where influential political figures failed to secure party tickets.
