Political Drama in Rivers as Fubara Appears Before APC Screening Panel Ahead of 2027 Election
Fresh political drama unfolded in Abuja as Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, appeared before the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship screening panel amid growing speculation over his political future ahead of the 2027 elections.
The development has further intensified political conversations in Rivers State, especially amid the lingering power struggle involving the governor and loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Reports indicated that Governor Fubara arrived at the screening venue in Abuja on Sunday and spent less than 10 minutes before the panel, triggering reactions and uncertainty over what transpired during the brief session.
Journalists stationed at the venue attempted to speak with the governor after the exercise, but he declined to make comments, simply responding, “No comment,” before leaving the premises.
Sources familiar with the screening process claimed that the governor appeared visibly uncomfortable after leaving the session, while reports also suggested that some loyalists of Wike who recently aligned with the APC were screened without controversy.
The APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, who also serves as secretary of the screening committee, declined to disclose details regarding Fubara’s screening, stating that the panel would release its official report after concluding the exercise.
Political observers believe the latest development reflects the deepening political calculations ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Rivers State, where alliances, defections, and party control continue to shape the political atmosphere.
The screening exercise comes amid reports that Governor Fubara’s allies had earlier secured APC governorship nomination forms on his behalf, despite ongoing tensions within Rivers political circles.
Analysts also noted that the governor’s appearance before the APC panel may signal broader political realignments within Rivers State politics as the battle for party structures and governorship control intensifies ahead of the next election cycle.
Meanwhile, the APC is expected to release its screening reports after completing consultations and internal review processes involving governorship aspirants across various states.
