Osun Deposes Jailed Monarch Oba Gbenga Oloyede, Ends Controversial Reign

The dramatic fall of Oba Gbenga Oloyede has taken a decisive turn, as the Osun State Government officially stripped him of his royal title, bringing an abrupt and symbolic end to a reign now overshadowed by scandal.
Once a revered traditional ruler, Oloyede’s fortunes have continued to unravel from both sides of the Atlantic. Currently serving a four-year prison sentence in the United States over COVID-19 fraud-related offences, the embattled monarch has now lost any remaining ties to the throne he once occupied.
The state government’s announcement last Tuesday confirmed his deposition as the Apetumodu of Ipetumodu, citing compliance with the Osun State Chiefs Law and other governing statutes regulating traditional institutions.
With the action, any lingering expectation of a return to power after his prison term has been effectively extinguished.
In a move underscoring the finality of the decision, all symbols of his authority including the revered staff of office have been withdrawn with immediate effect. The royal stool has consequently been declared vacant, paving the way for the selection of a new monarch.
The development marks a stunning reversal of fortune for Oloyede, who was once celebrated for his wealth, influence, and commanding presence within elite circles. Known for his flamboyance and generosity, he was widely regarded as a symbol of prestige before his legal troubles abroad shattered that image.
What remains now is a sobering narrative: a king whose reign ended not with honour, but in controversy a stark reminder of how swiftly power and prestige can dissolve under the weight of scandal.
The throne of Ipetumodu now awaits a new custodian, one expected to restore dignity and stability to a royal institution left deeply bruised.
