Lagos Ranked Africa’s Most Congested City in 2026 Report
Lagos has been ranked the most congested city in Africa for 2026, according to a new traffic assessment covering major urban centres across the continent.
The report shows that the city continues to struggle with severe traffic gridlock driven by rapid population growth, increased commercial activity, and limited transport infrastructure.
Lagos recorded a Traffic Index of 348.5, with residents spending an average of about 68 minutes on a one-way commute, placing it at the top of the ranking ahead of other major African cities.
Other cities on the list include Nairobi, Cairo, Pretoria, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Alexandria, Casablanca, Tunis, and Port Elizabeth, all of which also recorded significant levels of congestion but remained below Lagos in the ranking.
The report highlights that many African cities are experiencing worsening traffic conditions as urban populations expand faster than road networks and public transport systems can support.
Experts note that the situation reflects broader infrastructure challenges across rapidly growing metropolitan areas, where commuting time continues to increase year after year.
